How to Move from Squarespace to WordPress on Hostinger (Keep Your Content and Rankings)

Squarespace exports an XML file that WordPress can import, so pages and blog posts move across with their text and (mostly) images. Galleries, product pages, index pages and layouts do not export and are rebuilt on Hostinger. After importing, match URLs, add redirects for anything that changed, then point the domain at Hostinger. What Squarespace exports, and what it does not
Squarespace > Settings > Advanced > Import/Export > Export produces a WordPress-format XML. It contains:
- Regular pages (text and embedded images)
- One blog and its posts
- Basic image references
It does not contain: gallery pages, product pages, events, album or index pages, page layouts and styling, or any second blog. Those are rebuilt.
Step 1: Prepare on Squarespace
Crawl the site to get a URL list (Screaming Frog) and export Search Console's top pages. Clean up the Squarespace site first: delete drafts you do not want, and make sure the blog you want is the one that will export (only the first blog does; move posts if needed).
Step 2: Set up WordPress on Hostinger
Buy the plan, add the domain in hPanel with India as the server location, install WordPress on the temporary URL. Leave DNS alone for now.
Step 3: Import the XML
WordPress > Tools > Import > WordPress importer. Upload the Squarespace XML, assign posts to an author, tick "Download and import file attachments". Large sites may time out; split the XML or let us run it server-side.
Step 4: Fix what the import breaks
- Images that failed to download: re-upload from the Squarespace site.
- Squarespace-specific blocks come through as raw HTML; rebuild them with your page builder.
- Page URLs: Squarespace uses /page-slug and blog posts use /blog/post-slug. Set WordPress permalinks to match (/%postname%/ and a blog base of /blog/) so most URLs need no redirect.
Step 5: Rebuild galleries, products and layouts
Galleries become a WordPress gallery block or a plugin; products move to WooCommerce via a Squarespace Commerce CSV export and the WooCommerce importer; index pages become normal pages.
Step 6: Redirects
For every URL from the Step 1 crawl that does not exist identically on WordPress, add a 301 in Rank Math or the Redirection plugin. Squarespace cannot hold redirects once the domain leaves.
Step 7: Move the domain
Squarespace-registered domains: transfer out (Squarespace > Domains > Transfer) or change nameservers to Hostinger's. Third-party domains: change nameservers at the registrar. Keep Squarespace running for two weeks.
Step 8: Verify
SSL and HTTPS in hPanel, sitemap resubmission, crawl for 404s, forms tested, LiteSpeed cache on.

Does Squarespace export to WordPress?
Yes. Squarespace exports a WordPress-format XML with pages, one blog and basic images. Galleries, products, events, index pages and layouts do not export and must be rebuilt.
Do images move from Squarespace to WordPress?
Most do if you tick "Download and import file attachments" in the WordPress importer. Some fail on large sites and need re-uploading from the Squarespace pages.
Will my Squarespace blog URLs change on WordPress?
Not if you set WordPress permalinks to /blog/%postname%/ to match Squarespace's structure. Any URL that does change gets a 301 redirect on the WordPress side.
Will my website go offline during the move?
No, if you follow the order in this guide: build and test the copy on Hostinger first, then switch DNS. The old host keeps serving visitors until DNS propagates, so there is no gap.
Will I lose Google rankings by changing hosting?
Not if URLs stay the same. Rankings follow URLs and content, not servers. Keep the same paths, verify redirects, resubmit the sitemap in Search Console and watch for crawl errors for two weeks.
